Title:  Behavior at the Edge: Insights into the Properties of Materials Interfaces from Computer Simulations

Abstract: This talk will review the results of recent atomistic computer simulations exploring the behavior of materials interfaces in elemental metals and metallic alloys.  A particular focus will be the investigation of the nature of structural phase transitions in grain boundaries, induced by changes in temperature and composition, and their consequences for properties that impact mechanical properties and microstructural evolution.  The topic of grain-boundary interfacial phase transitions has been an active topic of study recently, with a variety of fascinating experimental observations reported in ceramic and metallic systems.  The current talk will focus initially on metallic grain boundaries, describing different types of structural transitions that have been observed in computer simulations to be induced thermally or by solute segregation.  The effect of these phase transitions on properties such as grain-boundary diffusion, ideal shear strength and coupled motion will be discussed.

Biography:Professor Asta received his PhD in an interdisciplinary Materials Physics program from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1993. He subsequently joined Sandia National Laboratories at Livermore, CA, as a postdoctoral researcher and then as a senior member of technical staff beginning in 1995. He joined the faculty of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University, as an Associate Professor in 2000.

In 2005 he joined the University of California, Davis, as a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, where he also served as vice-chair from 2008- 2009, and where he maintains an appointment as Adjunct Professor. In 2010 he joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, as a full Professor, and the Lawrence Berkley National Lab, as a faculty scientist. In 2012 he was appointed Chair of Materials Science and Engineering at UC Berkeley.
