Design and Fabrication of Functional Nanomaterials and Coatings by Sol-Gel Templating

Keeping in view the technological applications, we have been working to develop functional nanomaterials and coatings by the sol-gel method. These include inorganic-organic nanocomposite based hard- and wavelength selective antireflective coatings,1 superhydrophobic surfaces,2 plasmon tuning of metal nanoparticles (NPs) and their shape conversion in films,3 crystal structure tailoring of alloy NPs using the film matrix as template,4 metal/RGO nanocomposites,5 ordered mesoporous films6 and fibers,7 fluorescent nanodots incorporated films,8 etc. In this lecture I am going to highlight some of our activities on the fabrication of nanostructured materials by soft-templating method. In this approach ordered mesoporous films, nanofibers and inorganic-organic hybrid films can be prepared. Synthesis of ordered (hexagonal and cubic) mesoporous alumina films on glass has been accomplished using triblock (P123 and F127) surfactants as structure directors.6 Recently, a new F127-PVA/PVP-MO2 (M=Si, Ti) tri-constituent assembly approach has been developed to prepare electrospun SiO2 and anatase TiO2 nanofibers with ordered cubic mesopores.7 PVA/PVP was used not only to control the sol-viscosity but also to protect the F127 directed cubic micelles which usually deforms due to the high applied voltage during electrospinning.7 We showed that Cd0.5Zn0.5S:Cu quantum dots (QDs) and carbon dots (CDs) can be loaded in organically modified silica (ORMOSIL) films. In these films, highly populated QDs/CDs are retaining their fundamental characteristics because of proper capping by P123-ORMOSIL micellar assemblies. These films showed tunable color emission with high quantum yield.8

Dr. Goutam De received his Ph. D. (Science) degree from Jadavpur University in 1984 based on his work at Indian Association for the Cultivations of Science, Kolkata. He is currently holding a Chief Scientist position and heading Nano-Structured Materials Division at CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata. His present research interest covers glass and ceramic based functional nanomaterials and coatings by the sol-gel chemical route. So far he has published 122 research papers in international journals and filed 8 Indian patents and transferred two technologies to four Indian industries. Currently the process ‘hard-coatings on plastic ophthalmic lenses’ has been utilized commercially. He has been honored with several awards and recognitions: National Research Award in Nano Science and Technology from Nano Mission, DST, Govt. of India (2014), Material Research Society of India (MRSI)-ICSC Superconductivity & Materials Science Annual Prize for the year 2014, Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) Medal (2010), National Research & Development Corporation (NRDC) Meritorious Invention Award (2007), MRSI Medal (2005), Raman Research Fellowship (Univ. of New Mexico/Sandia National Lab., USA, 2003), Visiting Scientist (Italy, 1994-1996), Japan Science for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship (Kanazawa Univ., Japan 1986-87), the first ever Indian Thermal Analysis Society Award (1985), National scholarship for ranking first position in B.Sc. examination (1978) etc. He is Fellow of West Bengal Academy of Science & Technology and Royal Society of Chemistry, UK (FRSC). He is serving as an Associate Editor of Journal of Materials Chemistry A published by the Royal Society of Chemistry since January 2014.
